A day at the Ueno Zoo

The Ueno Zoo is Japan's oldest zoo, founded in 1886. Or something like that.

During ww2 they had to either relocate the animals or put them to sleep. I was trying to find the memorial to the Faithful Elephants, but did not recognize it.

On to happier topics--the animals.
Photo tour!

Guess what we saw first?

Fat and lazy.

Like Jabba the Hutt. If he was cute.

Keagan's selfie.

Elephants

And poop.

Macaques!  I love snow monkeys!  I wanted to visit an onsen where they'd feed, but the season is wrong and the trip is long.

Here is my favorite picture. <3

How sweet is that!

There was some grooming going on:

Eating bugs off each other. Ewwwww.

There was also some rambunctious play that was much like my Katniss and Cameo (cats) doing what we call the Kitten 500.

Tapir

Emu to the left of Keagan.

That's an African porcupine.

Red panda. Active and adorable.

These Penguins are real Jackasses. Read the sign.

Zaboomafoo!  Ok, the ring-tailed lemurs wouldn't pose, so I settled for a cute ruffled one.

This is the only picture I took in the Vivarium. There were crocs, lizards, frogs, etc. but I knew that at any moment there'd be a snake on steroids. Turns out there were 18 anacondas, 300 boas, 8 million king cobras...  I may exaggerate, but I was outta there faster than a mongoose.

Relatives may remember this.

The boys were fire-bellied newts for Halloween one year when the cartoon Cat Scratch was popular.

I love sloths!

Feeding time for the Roos at the zoo.

Giraffes. I couldn't believe how perfect their markings were.

This is a okapi.  But it looks like a deerzebracamel.

On the way out Havi caught a cicada. They're very loud right now.

They sound like electric crickets. The sound is almost industrial.
